Sister Joan Irene

Sister Joan Irene
"Do not to another what you would not want done to yourself" (Tobias 4:16).
The reading for today from the Rule of Saint Benedict concerns punishing others. It is from chapter 70.
The sixth century must have been a rather harsh time and many of the early monks were in a community that included young children.

It is so easy to see another person's faults and not my own. Today, if I am annoyed by anyone, I will look back to myself to see what part of the reaction comes from me and consider if I share any of that behavior. At the end of today, I will ask if I have done anything to anyone that I would not have wanted done to myself.
