The Works of God Mk 9:38-40
John said to Jesus, "Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons in your name, and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow us." Jesus replied, "Do not prevent him. There is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name who can at the same time speak ill of me. For whoever is not against us is for us."
The one who is doing good works is doing the will of God and is not opposed to Jesus but with the disciples. Some people leave no good deed unpunished, but in this reading Jesus is teaching to accept the good works and not stop those who are healing and doing God's work, they are with us. Someone who was not a disciple was driving out demons in Jesus' name. To the disciple John the person appeared a possible impostor to Jesus the person is for us and not to be stopped. "whoever is not against us is for us" Jesus again teaches acceptance of others.
