Mt 7:6, 12-14 Jesus said to his disciples: “Do not give what is holy to dogs, or throw your pearls before swine, lest they trample them underfoot, and turn and tear you to pieces. “Do to others whatever you would have them do to you. This is the Law and the Prophets. “Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the road broad that leads to destruction, and those who enter through it are many. How narrow the gate and constricted the road that leads to life. And those who find it are few.”
There are many ways to live life. There are times that I thought I was doing something very good and important and realized later that my efforts and time were not well spent, that what I had made or done was going to be misused or destroyed or tossed away. The narrow gate, I believe is the gate of the shepherd and the shepherd herds the sheep in for the night and lays his own body along the gate entrance to protect the sheep from predators that might come in the dark.
The famous golden rule is in this short reading also. To treat someone the way I would want to be treated...seems so simple but in life it never is simple, there are always challenges.
