Memorial of Saint Vincent de Paul, priest

Prv 30:5-9 Every word of God is tested; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Add nothing to his words, lest he reprove you, and you will be exposed as a deceiver. Two things I ask of you, deny them not to me before I die: Put falsehood and lying far from me, give me neither poverty nor riches; provide me only with the food I need; Lest, being full, I deny you, saying, “Who is the LORD?” Or, being in want, I steal, and profane the name of my God.

Ps 119:29, 72, 89, 101, 104, 163
R. (105) Your word, O Lord, is a lamp for my feet.
Remove from me the way of falsehood, and favor me with your law.
R. Your word, O Lord, is a lamp for my feet.
The law of your mouth is to me more preciousthan thousands of gold and silver pieces.
R. Your word, O Lord, is a lamp for my feet.
Your word, O LORD, endures forever;it is firm as the heavens.
R. Your word, O Lord, is a lamp for my feet.
From every evil way I withhold my feet, that I may keep your words.
R. Your word, O Lord, is a lamp for my feet.
Through your precepts I gain discernment;therefore I hate every false way.
R. Your word, O Lord, is a lamp for my feet.
Falsehood I hate and abhor;your law I love.
R. Your word, O Lord, is a lamp for my feet.

Lk 9:1-6 Jesus summoned the Twelve and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them to proclaim the Kingdom of God and to heal the sick. He said to them, “Take nothing for the journey, neither walking stick, nor sack, nor food, nor money, and let no one take a second tunic. Whatever house you enter, stay there and leave from there. And as for those who do not welcome you, when you leave that town, shake the dust from your feet in testimony against them.” Then they set out and went from village to village proclaiming the Good News and curing diseases everywhere.

My lectio yesterday was lost after writing it. I received a message that there was a technical error and it was not saved. The important part of the lectio was though that the Word of God had moved my heart yesterday morning and I carried that with me throughout my day.

The Gospel reading today is very direct. The followers of Jesus are being sent out to heal the sick and proclaim the Good News. There are few provisions that are needed. They are only to bring the simplest of necessities with them. I think that every time that i have traveled and brought more than the barest of necessities it burdened me and distracted me from the purpose of my travel. Caring for my baggage became more important than tending to the mission of my trip and intention of my itenerary.

There is another reason to not take other things on the mission of healing and evangelizing. That is to be sure to rely only on God. Healing the sick is a mission from God. My life in the last twelve years has been dedicated to growing in a healing profession. I often feel that I have just begun on this journey of being a healer and always pray to be an instrument of God's healing. The healer puts aside any self focus and responds to the needs and requests of those who are asking for healing. God is the healer and I am only an instrument of God's healing when I am blessed to be a part of tending to others.

Today my meditation on the gospel will be the idea of the disciples traveling with few possessions on their mission and how can I do that in what I do in my day today. I pray that those I encounter today will be touched by the light of the love of Christ and that I may carry that light into all that I do. I pray especially this morning for the new nursing students that I will be teaching today that they will keep that wonderful flame of love of healing and helping others that they have in their hearts with them as they continue on their journey as healers that are instruments of God's love in the world.
